Summer in Minnesota: Why We Wait All Year for This Season
There’s a reason Minnesotans talk about summer the way other people talk about vacations. After a long winter, the season arrives with patios, lakes, festivals and suddenly, everyone remembers why they love living here.
From backyard dinners to your towns yearly celebration, summers in Minnesota feels earned. And whether you’re soaking it all in or escaping to the cabin this time of the year brings its own rhythm.
What Summer Looks Like Around Here
Once June hits, life shifts outdoors. Restaurants move their tables outside, sidewalks fill up, everyone seem to be going somewhere and doing something and weekends suddenly feel too short.
Some of our favorite ways Minnesotans spend summer:
- Lake days (early mornings or golden-hour evenings are best, the sunsets at Lake Harriet are some of our faves)
- Bike rides around the lakes and long walks through the city
- Farmers markets and neighborhood food trucks
- Outdoor concerts and movie nights
- Porch hangs that turn into late dinners
In places like Minneapolis and Saint Paul, summer isn’t just a season, it’s a lifestyle reset.
Fourth of July: Peak Summer Energy
The Fourth of July weekend is my personal favorite, it's what I like to say peak summer! Fireworks, cabin trips, block parties, and packed patios make it one of the most active and fun weekends of the year.
It’s also when schedules get full fast. Families are traveling, weekends are booked, and many people mentally press pause on big decisions, real estate included.
Which leads to an important question…
What Happens to the Real Estate Market Over the 4th of July?
Short answer: it slows down but that’s not a bad thing.
Here’s what we typically see:
For Buyers
- Less competition
- Fewer multiple-offer situations
- More breathing room to think things through
For Sellers
- Fewer showings during the holiday week
- Serious buyers are still looking
- Homes that stay active get noticed again once people return
The market doesn’t stop it simply pauses, allowing everyone to enjoy the 4th, and then it picks back up mid-July.
Summer Is Still a Strategic Time to Make a Move
One of the biggest misconceptions is that summer is “too busy” to buy or sell. In reality, it can be one of the most practical times:
- Homes show beautifully with natural light and green landscapes
- Buyers can picture themselves living there right now
- Families plan around summer moves before the school year
Even if you’re not ready to act, summer is an excellent time to pay attention, ask questions, and get a feel for what’s happening in your neighborhood.
