How to Stage your Living Room

We all know that the kitchen is the heart of the home but truth be told the living room is where life happens when no one's around. It's where we watch TV, read a book or cozy up by the fire. But creating a welcoming living room isn't always as easy as one might think. A thoughtful layout and cozy design elements are key. Ready to get started? I'm sharing my top tips.

  1. Focus on your coffee table. It's the center piece of most living rooms. Make sure yours has all the elements; a few books, a tray, fresh flowers or a houseplant, mixed materials and something whimsical. While you're add it be sure to find and hide all those remotes.
  2. Let there be light. Open those curtains and turn on those lamps. Don't have a lamp, now may be the time to invest in a few.
  3. Move things around. People will need room to walk easily from one room to the next and check out the views, so please don't block the windows or the walkways.
  4. Add or update your rug. And make sure your furniture fits around it. The right sized rug makes all the difference.
  5. Update your light fixtures and your art. Both can easily date a room. Make sure they are right sized for the room and don't forget about the lightbulbs. Make sure they are all the same hue and brightness. You want a nice warm hue.
  6. Freshen up the pillows. Just like your art, pillows can become old and outdated. Head to your local Target and pick out a few for an easy and instant update.
  7. Consider replacing or adding some curtains. Keep them neutral and hang them high but curtains add a certain amount of softness that works so well in a living room.
  8. If you have a fireplace, make sure it's clean and declutter around it. Don't forget to decorate your mantle, use the rule of 3's and try to implement the similar elements to your coffee table.
  9. Remove the family pictures. I like to keep personal photo's to the bedrooms only. They're a more personal space and can handle the intimacy but living rooms need to be neutral.
  10. And finally don't forget to clean. A clean room is always welcoming.
