Living in the Tangletown Neighborhood, Minneapolis: A Local Homebuyer’s Guide
Tangletown is one of those Southwest Minneapolis neighborhoods you really only understand once you’ve walked it a few times. The streets curve and shift in a way that makes even a simple walk feel longer than it is and not in a bad way, just enough to make you pay attention to where you are.
It’s one of my favorite places to walk, not just for the homes, but because the hills and winding layout turn an everyday loop into something that actually feels like movement. You don’t realize how many hills you’ve climbed until you’re halfway through it.
Where Is Tangletown Located?
Tangletown sits in Southwest Minneapolis just south of 50th Street and west of Lyndale Avenue, wrapping around Minnehaha Creek.
It doesn’t follow the city grid in a clean way, which is part of what gives it its character. You’re close to major corridors, but the neighborhood itself feels tucked slightly off to the side.
The Feel of the Neighborhood
What stands out here is the street pattern more than anything else. Nothing is straight or predictable, so the experience of the neighborhood changes depending on how you move through it.
You’ll notice:
- Streets that curve and rise instead of running flat and direct
- Older homes set into natural grade changes rather than uniform lots
- Mature trees that soften the bends and corners
- A feeling of privacy that comes from layout more than distance
Homes in Tangletown
The housing here leans classic Minneapolis:
- Early 1900s two-stories
- Craftsman and Tudor-style homes
- Original character that’s been updated over time
- Lots that feel shaped rather than imposed
Because of the topography, homes don’t sit in perfect alignment, which gives each block a slightly different feel as you move through it.
Local Favorites & Everyday Stops
This is where Tangletown really shines in daily life, sharing just a few of our favorites.
- Wise Acre Eatery is one of those places that has become a default, farm-to-table, consistent, and easy to keep going back to
- Right next door, Tangletown Gardens is a year-round stop for plants, gifts, and seasonal inspiration
- A few minutes away, Patisserie 46 is an easy coffee-and-pastry routine that never really gets old
Parks, Walking & Daily Life
Tangletown is built for walking in a way that doesn’t feel designed.
- Hills and curves that make walks more interesting than repetitive
- Easy connection to Minnehaha Creek trails
- A layout that encourages longer loops without planning them
- Streets that feel different depending on the direction you take
It’s one of the few neighborhoods that doesn't follow the grid and it's actually possible to get turned around, maybe even lost.
Who Tangletown Is Best For
- People drawn to older homes with character
- Anyone who prefers neighborhoods with charm
- Buyers who want Southwest Minneapolis access
Buying or Selling in Tangletown
The market here tends to respond more to setting and condition than anything else.
For buyers:

- Move quickly when the right combination shows up
For sellers:
- Clean and well maintained
- Highlight outdoor use and natural surroundings
