What It’s Really Like Living in Minneapolis: Neighborhoods, Lakes and Local Life
Thinking about moving to Minneapolis, or just curious what it’s really like living in Minneapolis? Matt and I have lived in the city for years, and helping clients buy and sell homes here has given us a unique perspective on daily life. From neighborhood vibes to weekend lakeside walks, local restaurants, and community events, we love sharing what makes this city special.
As Minneapolis realtors, we also get a front-row seat to the neighborhoods and homes that make the city such a great place to live, and we’re sharing a little of that perspective here.
Restaurants, Museums & Nightlife
Food and culture are a big part of life here. There’s always a new restaurant to try or a museum to wander through or an iconic show to see at First Avenue or a play at the Guthrie, it’s the kind of city where you can mix a weekend brunch with a mid-day stroll through an art fair. For us, these little experiences are what it’s all about. We’ve actually put together a running list of our favorite spots to eat, drink, and shop around Minneapolis + St. Paul, and you can see it here.
Ease of Commute & Transportation
Another thing that surprises people moving here is how manageable getting around can be. Depending on the neighborhood, Matt and I often find that commuting downtown or across the city is quicker than you might expect. We also love the bike trails and how walkable many Minneapolis neighborhoods really are. It’s easy to build a routine that includes biking, walking, or a quick drive across town.
Neighborhoods & Housing Vibe
The City of Minneapolis has 83 residential neighborhoods organized into 11 communities, which means there truly is a neighborhood for every lifestyle.
Northeast Minneapolis feels artsy and eclectic, with classic bungalows and a strong creative community. Southwest Minneapolis tends to feel quieter and more residential, with beautiful Tudors, Colonials and Bungalows lining the streets. The North Loop has become one of the most popular spots in the city, known for modern condos, lofts, restaurants, and walkability.
One of the best ways to understand a Minneapolis neighborhood is simply walking around, chatting with neighbors, and exploring the local coffee shops and restaurants. Matt and I live in the Kenny neighborhood in Southwest Minneapolis in a classic center hall colonial, and we’ve loved being part of the community here.
Lakes & Outdoor Activities
One of our favorite things about living here is the easy access to lakes and trails. In the summer, you’ll find us walking around one of the lakes, Bde Maka Ska and Lake of the Isles are our favorites. The lakes really make Minneapolis feel like a city that blends urban life with nature effortlessly; in fact, I think the unofficial motto “City by Nature” or at the very least it was a popular hashtag at one point.
Community & City Culture
Minneapolis is a city where community matters. Matt and I love the small interactions, chatting with our neighbors, waving to familiar faces on weekend walks, or attending local events. The city has a long history of coming together in meaningful ways, so much so that Minneapolis was even nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for its community-driven initiatives. And of course, we get behind our sports teams, yes, even the Vikings and we’ll never forget the "Wolves Back" block party outside Target Center or when they painted "Go Wolves!" on First Avenue.
Seasonal Life & Weather
Minnesota winters are real and they can be brutal but snowy mornings can also be magical. There’s nothing quite like the quiet blanket that falls over the city when it snows. Spring brings us tulips and the tulip house and summer evenings along the lakes are unbeatable. Lake Harriet has the best sunsets. The colors are off the charts along the Mississippi River and our tree lined streets in the fall. We’ve learned to embrace each season, they’re part of what makes living here feel so special.
Schools, Families & Resources
For families, Minneapolis really shines. Matt and I love that the city offers all-day kindergarten, excellent after-school programs, and free breakfast for all students, plus great parks, libraries, and community activities. Our kids grew up playing sports with the neighborhood park boards, we met so many people that way and many of the kids are still friends.
